Commercial Construction Superintendent
Commercial Construction Site Superintendent | Full Time
Sigma Contracting is currently looking for additional commercial construction project superintendents to plan and ensure the coordination and safety of construction projects. Sigma is an Arizona based commercial general contractor started in 1983 and licensed in nine southwestern states. This is an opportunity to join an established firm with close ownership involvement and an average core staff tenure of twenty-plus years.
The successful candidate will have at least four years of commercial construction experience as a project superintendent which could include: new build, renovation work and tenant improvement projects. We are currently looking to find individuals with experience in industrial, medical, multi-family, office and/or retail commercial. This person will oversee and report on the daily management of projects, reporting directly to Project Management. The successful candidate must be comfortable interfacing with a team in a fast paced, dynamic, and challenging position/environment.
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Ensuring that both health and safety protocols are followed
- Being on site daily to oversee the project construction activities
- Ensuring that both material and wage budgets and schedules are maintained and followed
- Organizing the daily subcontractor workforce for performance as required and safety
- Liaise with government inspectors regarding licensing, safety and conformance with standards
- Ensure that quality of work and materials is maintained throughout the project
- Ensure that a clean site is maintained
- Write and maintain complete, timely and accurate project status reports with photos for overall project management
Requirements/skills needed for this position are:
- Be computer literate – familiar with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Office;
- Knowledge of Procore Project Management Software a plus
- Knowledge in supervising commercial building construction
- Experience in organizing and supervising subcontractors and their activities
- Must have the ability to maintain a schedule and multi-task, and change focus quickly and easily
- Must be a self-starter who can problem solve without finger pointing and complete tasks with minimal instructions;
- Must have the ability to work in a timely fashion and accurately while maintaining tight schedules
- Must exhibit the ability to interface as a team player with all interested parties

Estimating Assistant for Commercial Construction

This position is a central and integral part of the Estimating Department. The ideal candidate will need to possess strong computer and organizational skills; have a good attention to detail and the ability to multitask. All document control for each bid will be managed by the Estimating Assistant as well as maintaining the bid calendar, and with the estimating team, you will work to comply with requirements of Request for Proposals (RFP’s) as required. You will also occasionally be asked to participate and represent Sigma at certain industry events.
The ideal candidate should have at least 1-3 years of construction industry experience, be familiar with construction industry lingo and possess excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. Key Responsibilities
- Provide administrative support to the estimating department and other departments as neededMaintain and update each bid list daily (we often have multiple projects in various stages of bidding at one time)
- Update the Bid Calendar daily
- Receive and process plans, specifications and addenda from Sigma’s Business Development team
- Review plans for specific trades required and identify work scopes and set up bid on BidMail/BlueBook
- Read, interpret, understand and provide technical assistance to estimators including simple analysis of contract drawings and specifications
- Set up job in ProCore and load all required information
- Provide project specific document control – distribute plans, specifications, project addenda and other pertinent information to subcontractors and vendors using bid software to obtain quotes for our estimates in a timely manner
- Attend Job Walks when needed
- When required; solicitation of sub-trade pricing and MBE, WMBE, DVBE participation
- File all bid documents, bid updates, support documents and archive bid data
- Follow up with subcontractor and vendors by phone calls and email on quote returns
- Assist the estimators in the preparation of project estimates
- Bonus, but not a requirement, to be able to prepare accurate material quantity takeoffs for some trade work scopes
- Help prepare responses to requests for proposals as well as project specific and pre-qualifications questionnaires
- Support estimating team with bid-day assignments
- Distribute and track return of sub-contracts
- Maintain project information sheets for the bidding process and transition from bidding to project management
- Assist in the successful transfer to Operations once a project has been awarded
- Assist as needed in miscellaneous buyout
- Participation in industry organizations as needed
- Other administrative duties as required by the department, i.e., miscellaneous estimating correspondence
- Maintain a Current Project List
- Ability to be flexible in job duties, willing and interested to learn new skills and share what you know
Preferred Knowledge & Skills
- Previous experience working for a Subcontractor and/or General Contractor in a similar capacity is preferred but required
- 3-5 years of technical training or experience in the construction industry is an asset
- Computer skills using Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, Outlook, Access, PowerPoint
- Experience with estimating and takeoff software, knowledge of BidMail (or similar software) and ProCore software a big plus but not required
- Candidates must be an organized self-starter with a strong work ethic, strong interpersonal skills, high attention to detail, the ability to recognize discrepancies and to manage multiple tasks simultaneously
- Superior communication skills both written and oral
- Exceptional English reading, comprehension and writing skills
- Ability to work well under pressure with a focus on meeting definitive deadlines

Commercial Construction Junior Estimator
The Junior Estimator I works with the chief and senior estimators to coordinate bid coverage, solicit subcontractor pricing, prepare estimates and issue subcontract agreements.

Sigma is currently looking for a Commercial Construction Junior Estimator I for our Scottsdale AZ office. This position will work closely with the Senior Estimators and the Commercial Construction Estimating Assistant. The ideal candidate should have at least 1-3 years of commercial construction estimating experience, be familiar with reading blueprints and understanding specifications. You will learn and hone your expertise to conceptualize a budget without reliance on subs. As with reality these budgets will change and evolve, and you will be expected to know why and what facilitated any changes, and track them so you can offer explanation to those who need to know or maybe don’t comprehend why the changes occurred. You will also learn to properly evaluate various subtrade and vendor quotes for hard bids to create the successful project team and costs. You will interact not only with the sub-trades and vendors, but also with other interested parties such as Sigma’s clients, including architects, developers, lenders, owners and construction managers. In addition, you also may be asked to occasionally participate and represent Sigma at certain industry events.

Responsibilities
- Analyze blueprints, specifications and addenda for work scope and product needsAid in product research
- Learn and fine tune your ability to provide clear detailed quantity take offs
- Solicit competitive pricing from subtrade partners and suppliers for pursuit
- Create level playing field for subcontractors to prepare their estimates, organize and evaluate subcontractors and vendor quotations both in terms of costs but more importantly in terms of work scopes
- Assist with the establishment of project budgets for review by others
- Conduct accurate cost analyses and estimates
- Active participation in the preconstruction process to include preliminary cost analysis, timely and accurate estimates, value engineering, creating scope letters, subcontract negotiations, and project scheduling
- Assist in management of the design phase of the project and coordinate work between consultants and Design-Build Subcontractors, when required
- Issue RFI’s to the design team in advance of the estimate to obtain clarification to the plans and specifications
- Consult with Sigma’s internal company departments as directed by senior estimators, as well as with Sigma’s customers, including architects, developers, lenders, owners, subcontractors and vendors
- Attend bid walks, and other site visits prior to project bidding to assess existing conditions
- Perform occasional site visits after an award to troubleshoot concerns between our bid and customer requests
- Train with Field Superintendents to get hands on experience when needed
- Review constructability analysis of bid documents, including specifications, site conditions, contracts and building codes
- Actively vet new subcontractors to look at our work and establish business relationships with new subcontracting companies
- Construct pre-construction meetings with subcontractors, and manage prework subcontractor orientation meetings, and ensure that documentation is complete for each subcontractor
- Create and maintain pre-construction and estimating milestone schedules
- Assist the estimating team in the conceptual as well as hard bidding of projects
- Work closely with Preconstruction Manager on design build projects
- Assist in developing client relationships to enhance bid opportunities for future work
- Represent Sigma by attending industry events as needed
- Maintain professional and technical knowledge by: attending workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks and participating in professional industry organizations
Requirements
- Good construction acumen with 1-2 years of estimating experience in commercial construction
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related field
- Ethics and integrity in accordance with Sigma core values and company policy
- Conduct all business in accordance with Sigma company policies/procedures, and state, and federal laws
- Strong oral, written, analytical and communication skills with strong attention to detail
- Have the ability to work both independently and in a team environment with minimal daily supervision
- Have a working knowledge of estimating software, Microsoft Office Suite, knowledge of ProCore a plus and a strong aptitude for adopting new technology
- Must be detail-oriented, well organized, a team player, and able to prioritize duties to meet assigned deadlines

- Develop and maintain strong relationships with all stakeholders including lead estimator, subtrade partners and suppliers as well as Sigma clients including architects, developers, lenders, owners
- Understand how to review and analyze project plans and specifications, and read and interpret to identify discrepancies
- Accurately performs quantity takeoff
- Develops abstracts and competently evaluates basic trade bids in terms of costs and work scopes
- Must be able to understand the job scope process including site logistics, unforeseen and existing conditions, and constructability issues, hidden notes, missing details, and conflicting details
- Conceptual estimating experience is a plus to support these efforts within the department, including development of basic models for review by senior estimator and pre-construction services team
- Prepare analysis and estimates for use in selecting vendors or subcontractors
- Track and report real time cost data tracking actual cost costs, schedules relative to bid proposals as the project develops
- Draft subcontracts and purchase orders for review by senior estimator
- Assist in the buyout process with the subcontractors

Project Engineer Duties will include but are not limited to the following:
- Updates all aspects of the project and document control
- Implement assigned duties with an exceptional level of accuracy, timeliness, and cost effectiveness
- Review and process all submittals and RFI’s, ensuring compliance with contract documents and in accordance with project needs
